World Largest Basket

Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia - A group of 58 women from Fatat Al-Ahsa Benevolent Society at the Heritage Village in Al-Ahsa set a new Guinness World Records™ record by constructing the largest basket on 16 May 2010.

The basket, which measures 22 m in length, (72 ft 2.16 in) 14.9 m in width (48 ft 10.5 in) and 12.4 in (40 ft 8 in) height broke the previous record for a basket measuring 18.7 x 9.48 x 10.20 m, (59.61 x 31.10 x 33.46 ft), which was made by members of Turda Roma community of Romania between 25-27 September 2009.

The new world-beating basket which was made entirely from natural materials, including wicker and bamboo, resembled the Saudi traditional basket and was intended to draw attention to the traditional vocation of palm leaf handicrafts.

A total of 58 women from Fatat Al-Ahsa Benevolent Society who were supported by municipality of Al-Ahsa and the Ministry of Agriculture, worked daily for a month and a half to make this humongous basket.

Guinness World Records™ adjudicator Talal Omar was on hand to authenticate the record. After carefully measuring the large basket with the aid of two independent surveyors, he presented the certificates to Latifa Al-Afaliq, the director of Fatat Al-Ahsa Benevolent Society, and Nawal Al-Afaliq.

Princess Adela Bint Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz who also was present to witness this achievement, brought a touch of royalty to the event by presenting certificates to all participants humouring their work and efforts.
