Barack Obama stops by The Daily Show

(NECN) - Only a few laughs from President Obama last night as he tried to drum up the youth vote on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

The President spent much of the half hour defending his first two years in office. Stewart asked him if he knew two years ago -- what he knows now -- if his campaign slogan would be the same. Obama said it would be, "Yes we can, but it's not going to happen overnight."

Stewart asked, "How did we go in two years from 'hope and change, we are the people we've been looking for' to 'you're not going to give back the keys are you?' Are you disappointed in how it's gone? Are you surprised that other people, even your base can be disappointed? Or do you reject that narrative?"

Obama responded, "Look, when I won and we started the transition and we looked at what was happening in the economy, a whole bunch of my political folks came up and said, 'you know what, enjoy this now because two years from now folks are going to be frustrated,' and that is in fact what happened."

The President told Stewart he thinks Democrats have a chance to hold on to control of congress after the mid-term elections.

This was the first appearance by a sitting President on The Daily Show.
