Wiki Leaks Cables
WASHINGTON: Secret US embassy cables sent from Cairo in the past two years reveal that the Obama administration wanted to maintain a close political and military relationship with the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, who is now facing a popular uprising.
A frank briefing note in May 2009 ahead of Mubarak's trip to Washington, leaked by WikiLeaks, reported that the Egyptian president had a dismal opinion of Obama's predecessor, George Bush.
"The Egyptians want the visit to demonstrate that Egypt remains America's 'indispensable Arab ally', and that bilateral tensions have abated. President Mubarak is the proud leader of a proud nation ... Mubarak is 81 years old and in reasonably good health; his most notable problem is a hearing deficit in his left ear. He responds well to respect for Egypt and for his position, but is not swayed by personal flattery," the cable said.
"Mubarak peppers his observations with anecdotes that demonstrate both his long experience and his sense of humor ... During his 28-year tenure, he survived at least three assassination attempts, maintained peace with Israel, weathered two wars in Iraq and post-2003 regional instability, intermittent economic downturns, and a manageable but chronic internal terrorist threat.
"He is a tried and true realist, innately cautious and conservative, and has little time for idealistic goals. Mubarak viewed President Bush as naive, controlled by subordinates, and totally unprepared for dealing with post-Saddam Iraq, especially the rise of Iran's regional influence."
It predicted that if Mubarak were still alive for Egypt's next presidential election in 2011, "it is likely he will run again and, inevitably, win". The most likely contender to succeed him was his son Gamal, the cable suggested.
Another cable, dated 23 February 2009, described a meeting between Gamal and the maverick US senator Joe Lieberman. Lieberman is said to have listened as the president's son expounded on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Iran's growing regional influence and how Saddam Hussein – for all his flaws – was a bulwark against Iranian ambitions.
Another cable, from March 2009, shows the US's astonishingly intimate military relationship with Egypt. Washington provides Cairo $1.3bn annually in foreign military finance (FMF) to purchase US weapons and defence equipment, and the cable said. "President Mubarak and military leaders view our military assistance programme as the cornerstone of our mil-mil relationship and consider the $1.3bn in annual FMF as 'untouchable compensation' for making and maintaining peace with Israel.
"The tangible benefits to our mil-mil relationship are clear: Egypt remains at peace with Israel, and the US military enjoys priority access to the Suez canal and Egyptian airspace."

Obama to visit Pakistan in 2011 (IndiaPost)
NEW YORK: Even as President Barack Obama is readying to pack his bags for his three-day India trip he called Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari to convey his intent to visit Pakistan in 2011.In a telephone call on Oct 26, President Obama not only conveyed his intention to visit Pakistan next year, but also welcomed President Zardari to visit the US in the coming year.
President Obama called President Zardari to consult with him on the progress made during the recent US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue, and to reinforce America’s commitment to partner with Pakistan on economic, development, and governance priorities.
A White House statement says the two Presidents also discussed the progress that the US and Pakistan have made towards strengthening bilateral relations within the past two years. President Obama particularly highlighted the commitment of both Secretary Clinton and Foreign Minister Qureshi to the US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue.
Both President Obama and President Zardari acknowledged that more work needed to be done to address the direct threat to the two countries posed by terrorist groups in Pakistan.
Belying reports of distrust on the Afghanistan front, the two are stated to have agreed that the US and Pakistan have worked hard to build an atmosphere of trust and cooperation, and committed to ongoing efforts to build a stronger, strategic, and more collaborative US-Pakistan relationship.
President Obama further emphasized the United States’ commitment and support for democracy and transparency in Pakistan. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s economic difficulties, and encouraged President Zardari to work to pass key economic reforms, such as tax reform and containing energy subsidies.

Taliban attack allied bases in Afghanistan's Khost area
Suspected Taliban insurgents have attacked two coalition allied bases in eastern Afghanistan, Nato forces say.
Coalition forces repelled both attacks, killing 10 militants and capturing several more, Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said.
There was no confirmation of any allied casualties from the fighting, in Khost province south-east of Kabul.
The Taliban had earlier told reporters that at least 28 fighters - some of them suicide bombers - were involved.
The Isaf statement said: "Insurgent forces attacked the installations with indirect and small arms fire.
"Isaf ground forces, supported by combat aviation assets, killed at least 10 insurgents, captured several more and destroyed one recoil-less rifle."
The BBC's Quentin Sommerville, in Kabul, says Taliban insurgents are increasingly using this more sophisticated guerrilla-style attack.

Catalonia's bullfight ban provokes emotional response

The Catalan parliament voted to ban bullfighting in an emotional session packed full of deputies, activists and observers, says the KN's Sarah Rainsford in Barcelona.
In the end the vote passed by an absolute majority - a wider margin of victory than animal rights campaigners had dared hope for.
Sixty-eight deputies voted in favour of the ban; 55 were opposed.
"We had three different speeches prepared, and in the end we could read out the one for a big victory," laughed Jordi Casamitjana, who was heavily involved in pushing for this vote.
He admits he had expected a closer call.
"It means the politicians here actually get it. Bullfighting has no place in the 21st Century. I could not hold back my tears," he said.
He was not the only one. As the result was announced, those supporting the ban leapt and shouted for joy. Alongside them, some of the losers cried too - in frustration.
But activists collected 180,000 signatures in order to get this initiative off the ground and into parliament - and they were determined to enjoy the moment.
"I'm over the moon!" enthused Deborah Parris, who worked with the campaign group Prou (Enough, in Catalan), to ban the corrida, as the bullfight is known.
"There is incredible suffering in a bullfight. Six bulls are killed each time, not one, and they are tortured for 20 minutes," she said. "It's not right to pay money to go and watch that kind of cruelty."
