Not every case of murder is ‘target killing’, says Malik

KARACHI: Speaking to media representatives in Karachi, Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Saturday said that every murder case cannot be termed as an incident of target killing.

Until police sources confirm, no case should be called a case of target killing, Malik said.

The minister said security had now been beefed up around Karachi’s Shershah scrap market and a covert operation had been initiated against criminals in the aftermath of the latest killings in the city.

Malik said several criminals involved in the recent killings had been arrested. He further vowed to take the offenders to task without discrimination.

Responding to a question regarding US Ambassador Cameron Munter’s recent defence of drone attacks, Malik said the strikes violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and security and that the government was involved in negotiations with the US on the issue.

Gunmen attack Japanese diplomatic vehicle in Karachi

Unidentified gunmen fired at a car of Japanese consulate in Karachi on Thursday, injuring two Pakistani employees of the diplomatic mission, the city police chief said. Police chief Fayaz Lghari said that no foreigner was in the car when it came under attack. An administration officer at the consulate and a guard were injured in the firing, police said. The attackers fled after the firing. The police chief said that the attackers may have been trying to snatch the car. No group claimed responsibility for the incident.

Over 1500 cases of Dengue confirmed in Karachi

KARACHI, (SANA): As many as 1639 cases of dengue fever were confirmed this year in Karachi on Monday.

53 cases of dengue fever were reported in Hyderabad. In Lahore, 65 dengue patients admitted to hospitals.

Fourteen people have so far died of mosquito-borne dengue fever in Karachi while 197 patients have been under treatment in different hospitals.

In Punjab, the total number of dengue patients has risen to 807.

No letup in Karachi killings as 8 more die

KARACHI –The provincial capital remained tense and panic on Monday as another eight people fell prey to the target killing in separate incidents.

Unidentified armed motorcyclists killed 45-year-old Imran when he was sitting in a local hotel. In Bohra Pir, 28-year-old Imran was killed by unidentified gunmen while in North Nazimabad Kousar Colony, Ayyub Bangali was gunned down.

In Jumma Goth Korangi 30-year-old Abdullah was killed while Another two people were killed in different incidents of target killing in Quaidabad and Landhi Majeed Colony. Arshad was killed by unidentified gunmen on Jehangir Road and the deceased was a wanted criminal in many cases of murder and other cases.

In Agra Taj area of Karachi a young man ‘committed suicide due to poverty’. Another dead body was recovered from the Buffer Zone area of Karachi. Two suspected suicide bombers were apprehended from Karachi’s Sohrab Goth area as crackdown on suspected terrorist was under way in the provincial hub of the country. Police confirmed they had recovered suicide jackets and bombs from the suspects.

The Rangers and police carried out a joint operation in Shairpao Colony of Landhi area and arrested more than 35 activists of Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Afaq), sources said.

According to the police sources, six people were arrested with arms and ammunition. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers began operation against the activists of MQM (Afaq) and launched door-to-door search in the area.

Over 35 suspects were also taken into custody during the crackdown against the MQM. The road from Dawood Chorangi to Babar Market was closed for traffic when the operation was underway

The Interior Ministry warned the MQM central leadership of possible threats to the lives of party leaders. According to the report, the MQM leadership had been directed to remain vigilant and careful as the party leaders were was vulnerable to attacks in the present grave situation.

The Interior Ministry in a report sent to the MQM, warned that after the unremitting target killings in Karachi, some of their leaders could be targeted.

“Dr Farooq Sattar, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Mustafa Kamal, Faisal Sabzwari and others are on a frontline thus they must be careful and limit their activities to a certain extent.”

Meanwhile, The Coordination Committee of MQM has expressed grave concerns over the report received from the Ministry of Interior about threats to the lives of its leaders.

The Co-ordination Committee demanded concrete steps for protecting the lives of MQM Leaders.

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik also phoned the party leadership to and informed it that “there are serious threats to the lives of MQM’s deputy convener and Federal Minister Dr Farooq Sattar, Federal Minister Babar Khan Ghori, Deputy Parliamentary Leader of MQM in the National Assembly Haider Abbas Rizvi, and Provincial Minister Faisal Sabzwari hence they should be advised of extreme precaution.”

Expressing concerns over these reports, the Co-ordination Committee said that it was the constitutional and legal responsibility of the government to provide security to the MQM leaders. The committee demanded the government take serious notice of threat and prompt action to thwart possible attacks.

Separately, MQM chief Altaf Hussain condemned the blast at the shrine of Hazrat Fareed Ganj Shakar and expressed his sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of several devotees including women.

“Those who carry out suicide attacks and bomb blasts are not even worthy of being called humans.” Mr Hussain demanded the government take concrete steps to ensure protection to life and property of the people. He also prayed for the departed souls

Karachi’s Kabari Market death toll rises to 12 (GEO Pakistan)

KARACHI: The death toll in firing incident in Karachi’s Kabari Market of Sher Shah, mounted to 12, Geo News reported Tuesday.

According to Geo News correspondent, at least six unidentified armed men riding three motorbikes, opened indiscriminate fire in Kabari Market in Sher Shah area of Karachi, killing at least 12 people including shopkeepers and shoppers and injuring several others.

The eyewitnesses told Geo News that the miscreants, wearing helmets, went on firing spree for five minutes, triggering the panicked people to break up in stampede.

The saboteurs fled the scene effortlessly.

The injured have been shifted to hospitals, where emergency has been declared with more medical staff called on duty.

According to police sources, arriving late on the mishap site, the personnel of police and the Rangers put a security cordon around the Market.

Meantime, more additional contingents of security forces have been called in.

Hospital sources confirmed 12 deaths. Two bodies were transported to Abbasi Hospital and eight in Civil Hospital. (Last updated at 35)

Six People Killed in Karachi Violence

Pakistani police report that at least six people were shot dead and three vehicles torched in the commercial hub of Karachi on Monday.

Two people from the minority Shi'ite community, two from a religious Sunni group and two others affiliated to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were gunned down by unknown assailants in different neighborhoods of the city.

One of the victims was killed in crossfire when protesters from a Shi'ite funeral clashed with government security forces.

Later on Monday, unidentified people burned tires after torching at least three vehicles.

Karachi is the country’s main port and financial centre. The city has a history of factional, ethnic, religious and political violence. More than a hundred people have been killed in targeted attacks since June of this year.

Fresh target killings claim nine lives in Karachi

At least nine people were killed in different firing incidents as targeted killing gripped the metropolis once again. According to a private TV channel, 32-year old Aslam was killed in Malir Alfalah early Monday morning; another was shot dead in Gulshan-e Maymar; and, a 22-year old man identified as Dildar was gunned down in Korangi. The corpse of an unidentified man was found in Ibrahim Hyderi - his hands and feet were tied. Three people including two brothers Nadeem and Noman and their friend Ansar were targeted in North Karachi. In another incident of targeted killing, an MQM activist Farhan was killed in Yousuf Plaza. Separately, 40-year old Tanveer Abbas Rizvi was critically injured in Rizvia Society. He was immediately taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Local residents, in protest, burnt tires and blocked the road in Rizvia Society. Tanveer Abbas was a government employee; he left behind a wife and three children. Police has tightened security as tension prevailed in the city after these recent target killings.

CAP pre-medical colleges female results 2010

Karachi, Sept 20: The Chairman, Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) Committee, Professor Dr Nasir Ansar, has announced the placement results for the Pre-medical, female group, on Saturday evening.

According to Dr Ansar, who is also a Director-General, Colleges (Sindh), as many as 9,753 women had been granted admission into 56 intermediate public colleges and higher secondary school (HSS), in the pre-medical group for year 2010-11 under CAP.

He has asked the candidates to complete the admission procedure at earliest. The maximum cut-off ratio for the Abdullah Government College for Women was 707 while minimum cut-off ratio was 557.

Karachi shut down after killing of Imran Farooq

Pakistan's largest city has come to a near standstill following the killing in London of an exiled leader of the powerful Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

Supporters of the party have gathered to mourn Imran Farooq, who was stabbed outside his home on Thursday afternoon.

A BBC correspondent in Karachi says the situation is tense but peaceful. Most shops and schools are closed.

Last month, more than 80 people were killed in clashes in the city after the killing of another MQM politician.

British police say no-one has yet been arrested over the stabbing of Mr Farooq, and it is not clear if it was politically motivated.

Raza Haroon, a member of the MQM central coordination committee, said: "He was a gentleman, a very, very soft spoken person with a lot of knowledge, and who was very outspoken as well.

"It's a very huge loss to the party to have lost a senior leader, in such a manner. This is an irreparable loss and a great tragedy for the MQM."

HSC pre-medical colleges poor result

No student of 19 colleges passed HSC pre-medical exams
Karachi, Aug 12: Not a single student belonging to as many as 19 colleges and higher secondary schools of the city was declared successful in the Higher Secondary Certificate, Part-II, Science group (pre-medical) annual examinations-2010 results which were announced by the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) on Tuesday.

Statistics provided by the BIEK shows that the educational institutions whose performance remained abysmal in the examinations include four government colleges, seven public sector higher secondary schools and eight private colleges.

Moreover, there are 15 colleges and higher secondary schools whose not more than 10 per cent students passed in the examinations.

These institutions include 10 government colleges, three private higher secondary schools and one private college and one private higher secondary school.

The educational institutions whose pass percentage in the examinations remained zero per cent are: Govt Degree College for Boys (7D/2), North Karachi; MW Inter College; Govt Girls Higher Secondary School, Green-belt Area, Mehmoodabad; Pakistan Steel Mashal Intermediate College; Govt Degree Science, Arts and Commerce College, Murad Memon Goth; Liaquat College of Management and Sciences; Ashrafi Intermediate College, Gulshan-i-Iqbal; Govt Degree Science College, Malir, Saudabad; Govt Girls Higher Secondary School, Landhi No.1; Govt Boys Higher Secondary School No-2, 'K' Area Korangi; Allama Iqbal Govt Boys Higher Secondary School, Sohrab Goth; Govt Boys and Girls Higher Secondary School, Haji Nathoo, Malir; Govt Comprehensive Boys Higher Secondary School, Korangi-3; Recknor's College of Management and Computer Science; MTI Higher Secondary School; Tariq Bin Ziad College, Shah Faisal Colony; Govt Degree Boys College, Sham Pir, Baba Bhit; Dhaka College of Information Technology and Govt Boys Comprehensive Higher Secondary School, Azizabad, Federal B' Area.

Show-cause notices
When BIEK chairman Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai was contacted to know what action the board would take against these schools and colleges, he said that initially their affiliation with the BIEK would be suspended and if the management of such institutions failed to give any satisfactory answer in reply to the show-cause notices which were being issued to them then their affiliation would certainly be cancelled.

"Currently an exercise was under way at the board to check whether the educational institutions whose students' pass percentage was zero in the 2009 annual examinations and it remained the same in the 2010 examinations also," he said, adding that if it was found that an institution's pass percentage had remained zero in both the examinations, then stern action would definitely be taken against them in accordance with the board's rules.

Prof Zai said that although the BIEK could suspend affiliation of any educational institution whose students' pass percentage in exams remained below 30 per cent, most government colleges whose performance in the past year's examinations remained abysmal had attributed it to a shortage of teachers.

He, however, said that all those educational institutions whose students' pass percentage in the 2010 examinations remained 30 per cent or below would be asked to improve their performance through show-cause notices which soon be issued to them.

The rupee fell 0.1 percent this week to 85.76 against the dollar as of 8:38 a.m. in Karachi, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The currency reached 85.86 on Aug. 3, the lowest level since July 13, and has declined 1.7 percent so far this year.

The Karachi 100 Index of stocks dropped 1.6 percent this week, its worst five-day performance since June 11. The exchange closed an hour early on Aug. 3 due to the strike.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik accused a banned militant group, Sipah-e-Sahaba, of killing Haider as part of its campaign against members of the minority Shiite sect, according to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

Shoot-at-sight orders issued in Karachi

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik has hinted that Army can be called in Karachi, if needed, to maintain law and order situation in the metropolis.

Malik issued shoot-at-sight orders to get control over the deteriorating security situation in the City.

He was talking to newsmen at MQM Headquarter Nine-Zero on Thursday night after having condolence meeting with the leaders of Muttahida Qaumi Movement(MQM).

Governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan and MQM Rabita Committee members were also present on the occasion.

Rehman Malik reached Karachi after three days of bloody violence which had claimed the lives of more than 83 innocent people.

Interior Minister said that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani would visit Karachi on Friday to hold meetings with all the stake-holders over the unrest in the metropolis.

He said that important decisions were to be taken in the meetings , to assure that the law and order situation in Karachi witness a visible improvement in the next 24 hours.

Rehman Malik expressed his deep grief over the tragic murder of MQM leader Raza Haider and killing of innocent people in Karachi ,adding, that high-level investigation was being conducted to probe the killing of MQM MPA Raza Haider

He said that it was the responsibility of all the Pakistanis to foil the conspiracy of the anti-Pakistan elements, who wanted to destabilise the country.

He further said that Government would not allow killings to continue saying that some elements were hatching a conspiracy to create chaos in the economic hub of the country.

He announced to provide job to the son of deceased MQM MPA Raza Haider in FIA or Police department.

Earlier,talking to media at Karachi Airport on his arrival, he warned æterrorists and hired criminalsÆ to desist from mischief in Karachi or to be ready for a stern action.

Malik also called on the Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh leadership at Mardan House, the residence of ANP Sindh President Shahi Syed, to defuse the ongoing tension, between the coalition partners MQM and ANP.

کراچی: شدید بارش، طوفان کا خطرہ ٹل گیا

بحریہ عرب سے اٹھنے والے طوفان کے کراچی ساحل سے ٹکرانے کا خطرہ ٹل گیا ہے۔ محکمۂ موسمیات کا کہنا ہے کہ طوفان ٹھٹہ کے ساحلی علاقے جاتی سے ٹکرا گیا ہے جس کے بعد ٹھٹہ اور بدین کے ساحلی علاقوں میں شدید بارش جاری ہے۔

چیف میٹرولاجسٹ محمد ریاض کا کہنا ہے کہ طوفان کی شدت کم ہوگئی ہے اور یہ کیٹگری ون میں موجود ہے اس کا بیرونی حصار ٹکرایا ہے جبکہ کچھ گھنٹوں میں اس کا مرکز بھی ٹکرا جائیگا۔

ان کے مطابق اس طوفان کے ساتھ ایک سو کلومیٹر فی گھنٹہ کی رفتار سے ہوائیں چل رہی ہیں جبکہ سمندر میں تین سے پانچ فٹ اونچی لہریں اٹھ رہی ہیں۔

ڈائریکٹر جنرل محکمہ موسمیات ڈاکٹر قمر زمان کا کہنا ہے کہ طوفان ٹکرانے کے بعد کراچی سمیت سندھ بھر اور بلوچستان کے علاقے لسبیلہ میں آئندہ چوبیس سے چھتیس گھنٹے تک بارش کا سلسلہ جاری رہے گا۔

انہوں نے بلوچستان کے ماہی گیروں کو مشورہ دیا کہ وہ پیر سے اپنی سرگرمیاں بحال کرسکتے ہیں، جبکہ سندھ کے ماہی گیروں کو اس بارے میں پیر کی شام مشورہ دیا جائیگا۔

ڈاکٹر قمر زمان کا کہنا ہے کہ اس طوفان آئندہ چوبیس گھنٹوں میں اپنی شدت انتہائی کم کردے گا اور ایک ہوا کے دباؤ کے طور پر موجود رہے گا مگر اس دوران بارشیں جاری رہیں گی۔

دوسری جانب بدین کے ساحلی علاقوں کو سمندری طوفان کے ساتھ ایک اور بھی خطرہ درپیش ہے، وہ ہے ایل بی او ڈی سیم نالا۔

موسلا دھار بارشوں کی وجہ سے اس نالے کی سطح بلند ہو رہی، دو ہزار پانچ میں بارشوں اور طوفان کے باعث اس میں شگاف پڑ گیا تھا اور جانی اور مالی نقصان ہوا تھا۔

بدین میں ایک غیر سرکاری تنظیم سے وابستہ اقبال شیدی کا کہنا ہے کہ انتظامیہ اس طرف توجہ نہیں دے رہی ہے اس نالے کا ڈھانچہ خستہ حال ہے جس وجہ سے خدشہ ہے کہ سیم نالے کو شگاف کی صورت میں آس پاس کے گاؤں زیر آب آجائیں گے۔

اس سے پہلے موصول ہونے والی اطلاعات میں کہا گیا تھا کہ کراچی میں بارش کے دوران کرنٹ لگنے سے پانچ افراد ہلاک ہو گئے ہیں۔

بی بی سی کے نامہ نگار ریاض سہیل نے بتایا کہ سماجی ادارے ایدھی فاؤنڈیشن کا کہنا ہے کہ یہ ہلاکتیں ناظم آباد، برنس روڈ، پاک کالونی، شاھ لطیف ٹاؤن اور لانڈھی میں ہوئیں ہیں، جن کو جناح، عباسی اور سول ہسپتال پہنچایا گیا ہے۔

نامہ نگار کے مطابق ہلاک ہونے والوں میں دو بچے اور ایک خاتون بھی شامل ہیں، تاہم ای ڈی او صحت ڈاکٹر شھاب امام نے ہلاکتوں سے لاعلمی کا اظہار کیا ہے۔

بی بی سی اردو کے نامہ نگار نثار کھوکھر کے مطابق محکمۂ موسمیات کا کہنا ہے کہ کراچی میں مجموعی طور پر ایک سو سینتیس ملی میٹر باش ریکارڈ کی گئی ہے ۔

کراچی میں سب سے زیادہ بارش مسرور ائربیس پر ہوئی جبکہ کراچی کے علاقے صدر میں بانوے ملی میٹر ،شاہراہ فیصل پر بانوے، لانڈھی میں چھیاسٹھ، کراچی ائرپورٹ پر ستتر جبکہ کراچی یونیورسٹی اور گلستان جوہر کے علاقے میں ساٹھ ملی میٹر بارش ریکارڈ کی گئی ہے۔

محکمۂ موسمیات کے مطابق کراچی میں چوبیس گھنٹوں کے دوران مجموعی طور پر اتنی زیادہ بارش اس سے پہلے صرف جولائی سنہ انیس سو ستتر میں ہوئی تھی جب دو سو سات ملی میٹر بارش ریکارڈ کی گئی تھی۔

دوسری جانب ٹھٹھ میں ایک سو چھیالیس ملی میٹر، نوابشاہ میں بائیس اور پڈعیدن میں انتیس ملی میٹر بارش ریکارڈ کی گئی ہے۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ سنیچر کے روز بلوچستان کے علاقے گوادر میں تین سو ستر ملی میڑ ، جیونی میں دو سو آٹھ اور پسنی میں ایک سو تیس ملی میڑ بارش ریکارڈ کی گئی ہے۔
